Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2009 under the Naxos label, this collection serves as part of a comprehensive survey of Anton Webern’s complete works, conducted by the esteemed Robert Craft. Webern, a key figure in the Second Viennese School and a student of Arnold Schoenberg, was known for his extreme concision and rigorous atonal structure. These works, spanning his early tonal compositions to his later serialist experiments, represent the intellectual intensity of the early 20th-century avant-garde.

The recording features the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Twentieth Century Classics Ensemble under the baton of Robert Craft, a long-time associate of Igor Stravinsky and a dedicated champion of modernism. By bringing together soloists like Tony Arnold and Claire Booth to navigate Webern’s notoriously difficult vocal lines, the production aims to provide an accessible yet academically precise interpretation of music that historically challenged contemporary audiences with its fragmented, aphoristic nature.
