Where it came from
Released by Deutsche Grammophon during the late 1970s, this recording captures the collaboration between Carlo Maria Giulini and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. During his tenure as music director of the LA Philharmonic from 1978 to 1984, Giulini was widely credited with elevating the ensemble's international reputation through his focused, lyrical approach to the Romantic repertoire.
The disc pairs Beethoven's groundbreaking Symphony No. 3, 'Eroica,' with Schumann's 'Manfred' Overture. Giulini’s interpretation of Beethoven is noted for its structural clarity and emotional gravity, reflecting his characteristic attention to orchestral texture. Deutsche Grammophon captured this performance with the house's signature high-fidelity standards of the era, presenting a balanced soundstage that highlights the nuanced phrasing the conductor famously elicited from his musicians.
