Ballett-Suiten: Dornröschen • Schwanensee • Nußknacker (Sleeping Beauty • Swan Lake • Nutcracker)

Released by Deutsche Grammophon in 1996, this recording captures Mstislav Rostropovich leading the Berliner Philharmoniker in a selection of suites from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s most beloved ballets: The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker. The collaboration brought together one of the twentieth century's most storied conductors and cellists with the world-renowned Berlin ensemble, aiming to deliver a lush, technically precise interpretation of these cornerstones of the Romantic orchestral repertoire.

The album reflects the high standards of Deutsche Grammophon’s mid-nineties production, emphasizing a rich, expansive soundstage that highlights the intricate woodwind and string passages characteristic of Tchaikovsky’s orchestration. While the music had been recorded countless times, this specific release was received by critics as a testament to Rostropovich’s deeply expressive, often emotionally charged approach to Russian composers, solidifying its place as a staple for listeners seeking a sweeping, cinematic performance of these classic scores.
