Where it came from
Beethoven composed his Ninth Symphony between 1822 and 1824, intending to push the boundaries of the classical symphonic form by introducing vocal soloists and a full chorus in the final movement. This specific 1997 recording by the Nicolaus Esterházy Sinfonia, led by conductor Béla Drahos, was produced by Naxos as part of their comprehensive and budget-friendly effort to make the core classical repertoire accessible to a wider global audience.
The recording features soprano Hasmik Papian, mezzo-soprano Ruxandra Donose, tenor Manfred Fink, and baritone Claudio Otelli. The production is noted for its adherence to a traditional, clean performance style, reflecting the Naxos label's commitment to high-quality digital recordings without the premium price point associated with larger major labels of the era. It remains a standard reference for listeners seeking a reliable and straightforward interpretation of the Choral symphony.
