Symphony Nr.6 "Pathétique", Dornröschen-Suite

This 1989 release from His Master's Voice features the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Herbert von Karajan, a pairing that remains a cornerstone of mid-twentieth-century recorded classical music. The recording captures the intensity of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, the 'Pathétique,' which was the composer's final completed work, premiered just days before his death in 1893. By pairing the symphonic depth of the Sixth with the lighter, balletic charm of the Sleeping Beauty suite, the release offers a comprehensive view of Tchaikovsky’s melodic and emotional range.

Herbert von Karajan was known for his pursuit of a polished, lush orchestral sound, and his interpretations of Tchaikovsky are frequently cited for their technical precision and dramatic flair. This specific 1989 reissue brought historic analog recordings into the digital era, making them accessible to a new generation of listeners. The release is reflective of the catalog strategy at EMI and HMV during the late 1980s, which focused on remastering classic sessions to showcase the sonic capabilities of the compact disc format.
