Where it came from
Released in 1998, 't Dondert en 't bliksemt serves as the second studio album by the Dutch singer Guus Meeuwis and his band, Vagant. Following the massive success of their breakout debut, the project was crafted to solidify the group's place in the Dutch pop landscape, blending upbeat, sing-along folk-pop with the accessible, melodic sensibilities that became the hallmark of Meeuwis's career. The album arrived during a period of sustained growth for Dutch-language music, helping to bridge the gap between regional pop styles and mainstream radio success.
The album's design and production reflect the transition of the band from a student-led act to a professional touring outfit. By maintaining a sound grounded in organic instrumentation and approachable themes, the production team sought to cultivate a communal atmosphere that would resonate with live audiences in concert halls and festivals. Upon its release, the album was well-received by a public that had already embraced Meeuwis's cheerful, high-energy stage presence, cementing tracks from the record as staples of the band's enduring setlist.
