Where it came from
This 2017 collection, issued by the American Jazz Classics label, serves as a comprehensive compilation of essential recordings led by the influential jazz drummer Art Taylor. The set bundles three of his most acclaimed sessions from the late 1950s—Taylor's Wailers, Taylor's Tenors, and A.T.'s Delight—capturing a pivotal era of hard bop where Taylor acted as both a rhythmic anchor and a facilitator for legendary sidemen. These sessions, originally released on the Prestige and Blue Note labels, highlight Taylor's sophisticated sense of swing and his ability to curate ensemble chemistry during the height of the New York City jazz scene.
The artistic direction for these sessions was firmly rooted in the hard bop tradition, emphasizing spontaneous, blues-inflected improvisation and complex, driving rhythms. Art Taylor recruited top-tier talent for these dates, including jazz luminaries like John Coltrane, Walter Bishop Jr., and Stanley Turrentine, who were essential to the collection's enduring critical reception. By reissuing these albums as a single package, the collection honors Taylor's legacy as one of the most reliable and tasteful percussionists in jazz history, preserving a body of work that remains a staple for scholars and enthusiasts of mid-century instrumental jazz.
