Thank You Brother Bill: A Tribute To Bill Withers

Released in 2023 by Gulf Coast Records, this tribute album serves as a reverent exploration of the iconic songbook of Bill Withers. The project was spearheaded by soul-blues artist Kevin Burt, who collaborated with his band, Big Medicine, to reimagine Withers’ timeless compositions. The collection emerged from a desire to honor the profound influence of Withers’ songwriting legacy, which famously bridged the gap between soul, folk, and R&B, by interpreting his tracks through a distinct contemporary blues lens.

The album’s design and sonic direction reflect an intentional stripping back of production to highlight the emotional depth of the source material. Kevin Burt, known for his resonant baritone and mastery of the harmonica, sought to capture the understated intimacy that defined Withers’ original work. Upon its release, the project was received as a sincere homage, noted by critics for its tasteful arrangements and Burt’s ability to infuse personal stylistic flair into well-loved classics without compromising their essential spirit.
