The Fredericton Singing War Brides

The Fredericton Singing War Brides CD captures a unique piece of Canadian social history, documenting the stories of women who relocated to Fredericton, New Brunswick, after marrying Canadian servicemen during the Second World War. These women, many from the United Kingdom, formed a choral group as a way to preserve their cultural heritage and foster community support within their new environment, eventually recording their repertoire of traditional songs and wartime ballads to share their collective experience.

The recording serves as a historical document of the postwar immigrant experience, reflecting a period of significant demographic shift in Atlantic Canada. The design and production are modest, emphasizing the personal nature of the project rather than commercial appeal, with the collection serving as an oral and musical archive of the adjustment, camaraderie, and nostalgia that defined the lives of these women as they integrated into Canadian society.
