Provenance

Where it came from

The recordings compiled in these collections document the final years of Glenn Miller's career, specifically his service as a bandleader for the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War. Tasked with boosting morale, Miller assembled a massive group of musicians to perform for troops in Europe. These tracks represent a departure from the civilian swing sound, incorporating larger string sections and a more sophisticated, orchestral arrangement style that captured the tension and grandeur of the wartime era.

Released by RCA, these volumes serve as a definitive retrospective of the band's repertoire during the 1943-1944 period. The project was designed to preserve the high-fidelity airings of the band's broadcasts, which were initially recorded for the American Forces Network. Upon their eventual commercial release, critics and listeners praised the series for its technical clarity and for immortalizing the unique cross-genre arrangements that Miller developed before his disappearance in December 1944.
