Where it came from
This 2015 release on the Sony Classical label brings together conductor Lorin Maazel and violinists Patrice Fontanarosa and Régis Pasquier for a fresh interpretation of Vivaldi's perennial baroque masterpiece, The Four Seasons. The album was conceived as a continuation of Maazel's storied relationship with the work, aiming to showcase the technical precision of the soloists within the context of Maazel's expansive, often dramatic approach to period-informed orchestral layering.
The recording serves as a bridge between the traditional, lush orchestral sounds of the mid-twentieth century and the lean, historically informed style that gained dominance in later years. It is noted by critics for its balance between virtuosic flair and the rhythmic vitality that defines the work, reflecting a collaborative effort to re-examine the sonnets that underpin Vivaldi's concertos while maintaining a polished, accessible sound suitable for the Sony Classical catalogue.
