Where it came from
The Harvey Girls is a 1946 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical film centered on the expansion of the Fred Harvey restaurant chain in the American West. The soundtrack features the Academy Award-winning song 'On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe,' which became a signature piece for Judy Garland. The film was designed as a prestige production during the height of the studio system, utilizing elaborate sets and a large ensemble cast to capture a romanticized vision of frontier history.
The 2017 Calle Mayor release functions as an archival collection of the original film recordings. Such releases are typically curated for film score enthusiasts and collectors of mid-century musical theater, aiming to preserve the high-fidelity audio tracks from the studio's golden age. These releases are generally received as historical documents, providing cleaned and remastered versions of archival tapes that might otherwise remain in private studio vaults.
