The Nicolai Gedda Collection Of Swedish Songs: Wilhelm Peterson-Berger

Released in 1991 by the Bluebell of Sweden label, this compilation serves as a specialized tribute to the vocal music of Swedish composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger. The collection features performances by the celebrated tenor Nicolai Gedda, whose career was defined by his extraordinary linguistic facility and his commitment to the repertoire of his home country. The recording highlights the late-Romantic tradition of Swedish art song, known as 'romanser,' which Peterson-Berger helped define through his distinctively lyrical and melancholic musical language.

The album was produced during a period when Bluebell of Sweden was instrumental in archiving and preserving significant Swedish classical performances for a wider international audience. Nicolai Gedda’s interpretation was noted for its technical precision and his ability to capture the atmospheric qualities of Peterson-Berger’s writing, which often drew inspiration from the natural beauty and folklore of the Jämtland region. As a documentation of an essential partnership between composer and performer, the disc remains a standard reference for students of Scandinavian art song.
