Where it came from
Released in the early 1960s on Äva Records, this album captures the melodic, West Coast jazz sensibilities of pianist Pete Jolly. The project was conceived during a period when Jolly was a fixture of the Los Angeles studio scene, moving between film scoring sessions and club dates. The inclusion of 'And Friends' reflects the collaborative atmosphere of the era, bringing together a rotating cast of session musicians to support Jolly’s fluid, bop-influenced arrangements.
The album serves as a quintessential example of the accessible, light-touch jazz favored by Äva Records, a label founded in part by Fred Astaire. The design aesthetic is typical of the early sixties jazz LP, prioritizing a clean, sophisticated look that emphasizes the trio’s professional polish. While not a revolutionary avant-garde release, the record was well-received by contemporaries for its technical precision and the seamless chemistry Jolly maintained with his rhythm section.
