Where it came from
Released in 2012 by Cedille Records, this volume is part of a landmark multi-disc cycle featuring the Pacifica Quartet performing the complete string quartets of Dmitri Shostakovich alongside works by his Soviet contemporaries. The project was conceived to provide a comprehensive look at the evolution of Russian chamber music during the twentieth century, framing Shostakovich's intense psychological narratives within the broader political and artistic pressures of the Soviet era.
The quartet's approach, noted for its technical precision and emotional gravity, was designed to emphasize the structural complexity and biting irony characteristic of the period. This specific installment pairs Shostakovich’s Quartets Nos. 5, 6, and 7 with Sergei Prokofiev’s Quartet No. 2. Upon release, the cycle received significant critical acclaim for its authoritative interpretation and cohesive exploration of a repertoire that remains central to the modern string quartet canon.
