Where it came from
Released in 2013 by Cedille Records, this volume is part of a monumental multi-disc survey titled The Soviet Experience. The project was conceived to trace the evolution of the string quartet genre within the Soviet Union, highlighting the complex artistic interplay between Dmitri Shostakovich and his peers. By pairing Shostakovich’s quartets with those of Mieczysław Weinberg, the collection illuminates a creative dialogue shaped by the restrictive cultural policies and political pressures of the Stalinist and post-Stalinist eras.
The Pacifica Quartet was selected for this project due to their reputation for technical precision and intense, nuanced interpretations of 20th-century repertoire. In this third volume, the ensemble focuses on the middle and later periods of their respective subjects, emphasizing the structural depth and emotional gravity inherent in the music. Upon release, the series received significant critical acclaim, with critics frequently praising the ensemble for bringing a cohesive, intellectual rigor to these deeply personal and historically charged compositions.
