Where it came from
Released by RCA Red Seal in 2016, this compilation serves as a curated retrospective of the legendary soprano Florence Foster Jenkins, whose unintentional comedic genius made her a cult figure in the mid-20th century. The release was strategically timed to coincide with the 2016 biographical film starring Meryl Streep, bringing renewed interest to her original 78-rpm recordings and private vanity pressings. The collection captures her signature lack of pitch, rhythm, and vocal control, which paradoxically turned her Carnegie Hall performance into one of the most storied events in music history.
The album artwork and presentation lean into the camp aesthetic that has defined her legacy for decades. By positioning these recordings within the context of a high-fidelity RCA Red Seal release, the producers offered a contrast between the prestige of the label and the raw, earnest amateurism of Jenkins herself. The collection is intended as an affectionate tribute to a performer whose profound dedication to her craft—despite a complete inability to execute it—remains a fascinating study in confidence and artistic ambition.
