Where it came from
Vincenzo Bellini composed I Capuleti e i Montecchi in 1830 for the La Fenice opera house in Venice, utilizing a libretto by Felice Romani. The work is notable for its departure from Shakespeare's traditional narrative, instead drawing from older Italian sources of the Romeo and Juliet story. Bellini’s design for the music focused on long, lyrical melodies and a refined bel canto style, emphasizing the intense emotional interiority of the protagonists rather than the external action of the feud.
This 1998 RCA Red Seal recording features the Münchner Rundfunkorchester conducted by Roberto Abbado, with Vesselina Kasarova as Romeo and Eva Mei as Giulietta. The production was widely praised by critics for its interpretive clarity and vocal precision, particularly in how it highlights the fragile, melancholic nature of Bellini’s score. The recording has served as a benchmark for modern interpretations of the work, favored for its balanced dynamic range and the nuanced chemistry between its principal leads.
