Where it came from
Released in 2017, They Call Me Big Al serves as a self-produced showcase for Big Al Dorn and his ensemble, The Blues Howlers. The album emerged from the regional blues circuit, capturing the band's live-performance energy and their commitment to traditional blues structures. It reflects a project driven by independent artistic autonomy rather than major label oversight, allowing the artist to curate a tracklist that emphasizes his specific vocal style and instrumentation preferences.
The design and production of this CD align with the standard practices for independent blues artists seeking to provide physical merchandise at live gigs and local venues. By bypassing traditional label distribution, the album captures a raw, unfiltered perspective on the artist's personal repertoire. While not widely reviewed by mainstream music publications, the release functions as a vital record for the artist's local fan base and serves as a testament to the enduring influence of self-distributed blues recordings in the digital age.
