Where it came from
Released in 2019, Get It While It's Hot serves as a collaborative effort between Big Al Dorn, his band The Blues Howlers, and veteran harmonica player Jim Liban. The album was self-released, reflecting a DIY approach common among regional blues artists looking to capture the raw, live energy of their performances without the interference of a traditional label infrastructure. It stands as a document of the active Midwest blues scene, emphasizing the improvisational chemistry between Dorn’s guitar-heavy blues style and Liban’s well-regarded, soulful harmonica work.
The album was designed to showcase the band's tight, road-tested sound and provide a tangible product for fans at their club dates. By opting to remain independent, the artists maintained full creative control over the track selection and the aesthetic presentation, which leans into traditional blues iconography. While the release remains a niche item primarily circulating within the blues community, it was received as a sincere addition to the discography of both Dorn and Liban, appreciated by regional enthusiasts for its straightforward commitment to classic blues structures and blues-rock instrumentation.
