To Willie From Billy

To Willie From Billy was released in 2022 by the Johnson City, Tennessee-based group Bill and the Belles. The project serves as a tribute to the songwriting legacy of Willie Nelson, reflecting the band’s deep-rooted commitment to the sounds of early country, old-time, and vaudeville music. By reinterpreting Nelson's expansive catalog, the band sought to showcase the durability of his compositions when filtered through their signature Appalachian-inflected string band aesthetic.

The album was produced independently, bypassing major record label distribution to maintain a focused, intimate production quality that highlights the group's tight vocal harmonies and instrumental interplay. The design and arrangement reflect a desire to honor the storytelling traditions of the American songbook, aiming for a vintage sensibility that feels both respectful of the source material and true to the band's own identity. It was met with appreciation from the niche Americana and roots music community, noted for its authenticity and the band’s ability to bridge the gap between historic musical traditions and contemporary performance.
