Provenance

Where it came from

Under Jolly Roger was originally released in 1987, marking a significant transition for the German heavy metal band Running Wild. Before this record, the group explored occult and darker themes, but frontman Rock 'n' Rolf Kasparek shifted the band's identity entirely toward pirate imagery with this release. The album serves as the foundation for the band's long-standing nautical aesthetic, establishing a swashbuckling persona that influenced the later subgenre of pirate metal.

The 2017 reissue on the Noise label provides a remastered look at this pivotal work, preserving the raw, speed-metal production that defined the late eighties German scene. While the initial 1987 reception was mixed due to the abrupt thematic departure, the album has since gained retrospective acclaim as a cult classic. It is widely considered the record that birthed the band's most recognizable iconography and solidified their place in European power metal history.
