Where it came from
Under Jolly Roger was originally released in 1987, marking a pivotal transformation for the German heavy metal band Running Wild. Before this record, the group explored occult and darker lyrical themes common in the burgeoning thrash and speed metal scenes. With this release, band leader Rolf Kasparek introduced the band’s signature pirate-themed aesthetic, effectively pioneering the pirate metal subgenre.
The 2007 edition, issued by Noise Records, serves as a remaster of this seminal work. The album is characterized by its raw, gritty production and riff-heavy song structures that lean into themes of rebellion and nautical folklore. While critics at the time noted the departure from their earlier sound, the album's distinct visual branding and adventurous songcraft secured its status as a foundational release in the power metal canon.
