Provenance

Where it came from

Originally released in 1987, Under Jolly Roger represents a pivotal shift for the German heavy metal band Running Wild. The album marked the group's transition from traditional heavy metal toward the pirate-themed power metal aesthetic that would define their career and legacy. It was conceived as a thematic departure, blending gritty, speed-influenced riffs with a conceptual focus on buccaneering and maritime adventure that was highly unconventional for the genre at the time.

The album was produced during a period of creative experimentation for the band, led by frontman Rolf Kasparek. The iconic cover art and conceptual direction were designed to establish a distinct, narrative-driven identity that resonated strongly within the European metal scene. While initially viewed as a curiosity due to its niche thematic focus, the album is now widely recognized as a foundational work of pirate metal, influencing a generation of power metal bands that followed in the band's wake.
