Único y diferente

Released in the early 2000s under the Connector label, Único y diferente captures the virtuosic percussion work of Carlos 'Patato' Valdés, a legendary Cuban conguero who redefined Latin jazz. The album serves as a culmination of his expansive career, emphasizing the intricate polyrhythms and melodic conga playing that he pioneered after moving to New York in the 1950s. It stands as a testament to his legacy as a foundational figure in the development of modern Afro-Cuban jazz.

The design and production reflect the high standards of the Latin jazz community, aiming to preserve the organic, punchy acoustic sound for which Valdés was renowned. As a late-career project, the record was intended to showcase his undiminished technical ability and his status as an elder statesman of the genre. It received respectful attention from jazz critics and percussion aficionados, who viewed the work as an essential documentation of a master musician who spent his life bridging traditional Afro-Cuban roots with contemporary jazz improvisation.
