Where it came from
Van Mij was released in 2002 by the Dutch alternative rock band VanKatoen, serving as their debut full-length studio album under the independent Cotton Records label. Emerging from the vibrant Dutch underground scene of the early 2000s, the band gained a dedicated following for their energetic, guitar-driven sound and lyrics delivered in their native tongue. The album represents a period of significant growth for the group as they transitioned from regional club performances to broader recognition within the Netherlands.
The album's design reflects the DIY ethos prevalent among independent bands of that era, focusing on a raw, direct aesthetic that mirrors the band's musical delivery. While specific design credits are rarely cited in mainstream music journalism, the artwork was crafted to align with the band's identity as an accessible, high-energy rock outfit. Upon its release, Van Mij was received as a promising debut, helping to solidify VanKatoen's reputation as a staple of the Dutch alternative circuit and paving the way for their subsequent work.
