Where it came from
Vanitas was released by Alpha Classics in 2020 as a thematic exploration of mortality and the fleeting nature of life, weaving together works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, and contemporary composer Wolfgang Rihm. The album serves as a curated dialogue between the classical German Lieder tradition and modern sensibilities, presented by baritone Georg Nigl and fortepianist Olga Pashchenko. The choice of a period instrument like the fortepiano provides a stark, intimate sonic texture intended to strip away the artifice often associated with later interpretations of these works.
The album's conceptual design centers on the tension between historical repertoire and Rihm's modern contributions, particularly his 'Vier Gedichte von Peter Härtling.' The collaboration was well-received by critics for its intellectual rigor and the seamless fusion of diverse musical eras, positioning the listener to contemplate the vanity and transience themes inherent in the title. By pairing the masters of the nineteenth century with Rihm, the performers highlight the enduring relevance of melancholic reflection in classical vocal music.
