Les Frères Francœur

Released by Alpha Classics in 2022, Les Frères Francœur is a focused exploration of the musical dynasty that dominated the French court throughout the 18th century. Violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte and harpsichordist Justin Taylor curated this program to revive the virtuosic, highly ornamented compositions of the Francœur family, specifically François and Louis-Joseph, alongside contemporaries like Rebel and Anet. The project seeks to highlight the transition of the French violin school from the baroque era toward the more expressive, gallic styles that defined the royal entertainments at Versailles.

The album is noted for its meticulous historical performance practice, utilizing period-appropriate instruments to capture the specific tonal qualities sought by the Francœur brothers. The design and production reflect a commitment to the aesthetic of the French Enlightenment, with the musicians aiming to balance technical precision with the playful, dance-oriented rhythms of the time. Critical reception has been largely positive, with reviewers praising the duo for bringing a sense of rediscovery to repertoire that had remained largely overshadowed by more canonical baroque composers.
