Where it came from
Released in 2022 by Alpha Classics, Zauberoper is a curated collection of operatic arias and scenes that highlights the theatrical and experimental spirit of the late 18th-century Viennese stage. The project seeks to reconstruct the atmosphere of the 'Zauberoper' or magic opera, a genre that flourished in the suburban theaters of Vienna by blending supernatural elements, comedy, and sophisticated musical structures.
The album features baritone Konstantin Krimmel accompanied by the Neue Hofkapelle München under the direction of Rüdiger Lotter. The selection emphasizes the creative dialogue between Mozart, Haydn, and Salieri, focusing on how these composers navigated the public's desire for spectacle and emotional depth. Critics have noted the recording for its stylistic precision and for successfully capturing the playful yet demanding nature of the operatic traditions that defined the period.
