Where it came from
Released by the prestigious classical label Orfeo in 2020, this recording showcases the virtuosic clarinet repertoire of the early Romantic era. The album brings together three distinct concertante works: Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 1, Kurpiński’s Clarinet Concerto in B-flat major, and Crusell’s Introduction et Air suédois. The project was conceived to highlight the idiomatic challenges and lyrical beauty of these early 19th-century pieces, pairing soloist Sharon Kam with the ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien under the baton of Gregor Bühl.
Sharon Kam is widely regarded as one of the world's leading clarinetists, known for her expressive tone and technical precision. In this production, she emphasizes the thematic similarities between the Polish, German, and Swedish influences present in the selections. Critics noted the album for its bright, articulate orchestral textures and Kam’s ability to balance the showmanship required by Crusell and Weber with the melodic charm found in the less frequently recorded work of Kurpiński.
