Where it came from
Released by the Munich-based label Winter & Winter in 2016, this recording features the ensemble Die Freitagsakademie performing the piano and wind quintets by Ludwig van Beethoven and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. These works, both composed in E-flat major, serve as a fascinating mirror to one another, with Beethoven's quintet deeply influenced by the structural clarity and conversational interplay established by Mozart's own earlier composition in the same form.
The album is part of the 'Wiener Klassik' series, which emphasizes historically informed performance practices. Die Freitagsakademie utilizes period-appropriate instruments to capture the specific timbral colors intended by the composers, aiming to highlight the 'unusual instrumentation' mentioned in the title. The label, known for its distinctive and often avant-garde visual aesthetic, presents these classical staples within a curated, modern context that prioritizes both sonic authenticity and artistic presentation.
