Willem Mengelberg: Etsen Van Rembrandt & Modest Moussorgsky: Schilderijen Van Een Tentoonstelling

This 1999 release features the Orkest van het Oosten, led by conductor Jaap van Zweden, performing works that pay homage to historical artistic influences. The album title references Willem Mengelberg, the legendary Dutch conductor whose interpretive style deeply influenced the musical landscape of the Netherlands. By juxtaposing Rembrandt’s etchings—represented here through musical allusion—with Mussorgsky’s 'Pictures at an Exhibition,' the recording explores the intersection of visual art and programmatic music.

The production serves as a testament to Jaap van Zweden’s tenure with the Orkest van het Oosten, a period characterized by rigorous technical development and a commitment to broad, expressive orchestral textures. The choice of repertoire demonstrates a thematic focus on narrative storytelling within music, aiming to capture the stark, atmospheric quality of Rembrandt's prints alongside the vivid, multi-layered descriptions found in Mussorgsky’s suite. As an independent or limited release, the disc is regarded as a niche document of the ensemble's evolution under van Zweden’s early leadership.
