Where it came from
Released in 2022 under the Train Fantôme label, 'X' serves as a definitive milestone for Fred Pallem and his long-standing orchestral ensemble, Le Sacre du tympan. The project was conceived to celebrate the collective's twentieth anniversary, distilling their eclectic musical journey into a singular studio effort. Pallem, a prolific composer known for blending jazz, film noir scores, and pop sensibilities, intended this work to act as a retrospective of the group's highly textured, cinematic aesthetic.
The album reflects Pallem’s meticulous approach to arrangement, drawing on a diverse palette of brass, strings, and experimental electronics. Critical reception highlighted the work for its technical precision and its ability to weave disparate musical genres into a cohesive, avant-garde pop framework. By bridging the gap between classical instrumentation and modern production, the record solidified Pallem’s reputation as a unique curator of contemporary French instrumental music.
