Where it came from
Released in 1980 as the third studio album by Yellow Magic Orchestra, X∞ Multiplies represents a pivotal moment in the group's transition toward a more experimental, conceptual sound. The record serves as a hybrid of studio compositions and live recordings, heavily influenced by the Japanese manzai comedy tradition. This specific 1992 release on the Roadrunner label brought the project to a wider international audience during the height of the early 90s revival of electronic music and Japanese pop culture.
The album's design and artistic direction were heavily guided by the band members—Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono, and Yukihiro Takahashi—who sought to blend cutting-edge synthesizer work with satirical skits. The aesthetic reflects their fascination with mass media, global pop culture, and the artifice of performance. While critics at the time found the inclusion of non-musical comedic segments polarizing, the album is now recognized as a bold piece of avant-garde pop art that solidified the group's status as pioneers of the techno-pop genre.
