Where it came from
Y++ represents a collaborative venture between Old Nick and Virtual Alien, released under the Mnemonics Music America label in 2021. The album emerged during a period of heightened interest in experimental electronic textures and post-industrial soundscapes, positioning itself within the niche avant-garde electronic scene that flourished in the early 2020s. It was conceived as a sonic exploration of digital decay and memory, reflecting the label's commitment to bridging high-concept synthesis with accessible rhythmic foundations.
The visual identity and design of the CD packaging were crafted to mirror the distorted, glitch-heavy aesthetic of the audio production. By prioritizing a minimalist yet abrasive visual language, the designers intended to evoke the cold, mechanical nature of the source material. Upon its release, the project was received as a technically proficient contribution to the Mnemonics catalog, earning praise from niche music publications for its cohesive atmosphere and the deliberate, layered composition characteristic of both artists.
