Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T.: Drawings of Patient O. T.

Released in 1983 on the Some Bizzare label, Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T. represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of Einstürzende Neubauten. The album was recorded during a period of intense creative output, following the band's emergence from the West Berlin underground scene. It was produced in the context of the Neue Deutsche Welle era, yet it sharply diverged from mainstream synth-pop by utilizing homemade instruments, scrap metal, and industrial noise, capturing a raw and visceral aesthetic that defined the group's early identity.

The album's title and thematic structure were inspired by the psychiatric case study of Oswald Tschetschoggl, an Austrian patient whose bizarre drawings served as a conceptual foundation for Blixa Bargeld’s lyrical exploration of mental instability and fragmented perception. The band’s design choices, including the stark, unsettling cover art, were intended to mirror the clinical yet chaotic nature of the recordings. Upon its release, it was met with fascination by the avant-garde music press, solidifying the band's reputation for pushing the boundaries of what could be considered music and establishing them as pioneers of the industrial genre.
