Where it came from
The 2003 Canadian one-cent coin occupies a unique position in numismatic history as it was produced during a year of transition. This particular issue features the iconic effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt, which had graced Canadian coinage since 1990. It represents the final year of this specific design, as the Royal Canadian Mint began transitioning to the younger effigy designed by Susanna Blunt later that same year.
The design shift was part of a broader effort to modernize the portrait of the monarch on Commonwealth currency, opting for a contemporary look rather than the traditional regalia. Dora de Pédery-Hunt’s design, characterized by the Queen wearing a necklace and a tiara, was well-regarded for its dignified representation. The 2003 coins featuring her effigy are highly sought after by collectors as they mark the end of an era before the adoption of the 'effigy with no crown' that defined the remainder of the penny's existence until its eventual discontinuation in 2012.
