Where it came from
The 2001 Canadian 3-cent coin featuring Elizabeth II is a unique commemorative issue released by the Royal Canadian Mint to honor the 150th anniversary of Canada's first postage stamp, known as the 'Threepenny Beaver.' The coin was designed to replicate the aesthetic of the original 1851 stamp, which featured a portrait of a beaver—a national symbol—within an ornate rectangular border, transitioning the historic stamp imagery into a decimal currency format.
The production process for this specific issue involved applying a selective gold plating to the relief of the design, which contrasted against the silver-base coin to draw attention to the historical motif. As part of a larger series of numismatic collectibles focused on Canadian heritage and philatelic history, the piece was received primarily by collectors interested in the intersection of postal history and Canadian coinage, rather than as a circulating denomination.
