Where it came from
This 2017 Canadian one-cent coin was issued as part of the Canada 150 commemorative collection, honoring the 150th anniversary of Confederation. While the official circulation of the Canadian penny ended in 2013, the Royal Canadian Mint struck a limited number of these special pieces featuring the classic 1911 'small leaves' design to celebrate the nation's numismatic heritage.
The original 1911 design was created by W.H.J. Blakemore, featuring the wreath of maple leaves that became synonymous with early Canadian coinage. By reviving this historical motif for the 2017 issue, the Mint intended to bridge the gap between Canada's colonial beginnings under King George V and the modern era, offering collectors a tangible connection to the original design's elegance and historical significance.
