Where it came from
This coin is a 2017 commemorative issue from the Royal Canadian Mint, released to honor the 150th anniversary of Confederation. It reproduces the iconic Maple Leaf design originally intended for the 1927 Canadian cent, a design that was famously bypassed at the time in favor of a different aesthetic direction. By reviving this historical pattern, the Mint allowed numismatists to hold a physical representation of an alternate path in Canadian coinage history.
The design features the intricate maple leaf motif originally proposed by artists of the period, capturing the spirit of mid-1920s Canadian numismatic art. The 2017 series was conceived as a retrospective celebration of the nation’s heritage, and the choice to strike this forgotten 1927 pattern served as a nod to the archivists and designers who shape the visual identity of currency. It has been well-received by collectors who appreciate the historical continuity and the craftsmanship required to bring a century-old design concept to modern production.
