Where it came from
This 2014 New Zealand one-dollar coin was issued by the New Zealand Post as part of a commemorative collection celebrating the release of the film The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. The coin was produced to mark the conclusion of the Peter Jackson film trilogy, which was filmed in New Zealand and became a significant part of the nation's cultural identity during the early 2010s.
The coin features an obverse portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, while the reverse depicts the character Azog the Defiler. The design focuses on the detailed prosthetic and digital character work associated with Weta Workshop, the Wellington-based design firm responsible for the visual effects of the films. These coins were minted primarily for the collector market and distributed through numismatic channels to fans of the franchise and film memorabilia.
