Where it came from
The 2006 Australian one-dollar coin, featuring the 'Australia on the Map' design, was minted to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first recorded European landing on the Australian continent by Willem Janszoon in 1606. This commemorative issue serves as a numismatic tribute to the early maritime exploration and the subsequent mapping of the coastline, reflecting Australia’s historical connection to global exploration during the Age of Discovery.
The reverse of the coin was designed by Vladimir Gottwald, a prominent designer at the Royal Australian Mint. The imagery depicts a stylistic representation of an early navigational map overlaying the Australian landmass, intended to evoke the historical cartography used by Dutch explorers. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s mature effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which was the standard portrait used on Australian coinage during that period. The release was well-received by collectors for its clear historical focus and high-quality strike.
