Where it came from
The 2016 five-dollar coin featuring the December birthstone was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of a twelve-coin series celebrating monthly birthstones. Struck in sterling silver and enhanced with a genuine Swarovski crystal, this series was designed to appeal to gift-givers and collectors interested in personalized numismatic keepsakes. The coin follows a consistent aesthetic across the series, utilizing a classic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and a stylized floral representation on the reverse to complement the birthstone.
The design of this series reflects the Royal Canadian Mint's strategy of combining traditional precious metals with decorative elements to reach broader consumer markets. By integrating birthstone motifs, the Mint successfully positioned these coins as commemorative tokens for birthdays and anniversaries rather than solely as currency or bullion. Upon its release, the series was well-received by those interested in themed collectibles, praised for its craftsmanship and the accessible entry point it provided for casual numismatists.
