Where it came from
The 1934 Victorian Centenary florin was issued to commemorate the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of Melbourne and the establishment of the state of Victoria. It remains one of the few Australian commemorative coins issued during the reign of King George V, marking a period where commemorative numismatics were relatively rare and highly anticipated by the public.
The design was created by George Kruger Gray, a renowned artist who produced many of the iconic coin designs for the British Empire during the early 20th century. The reverse features a standing figure of Victoria, symbolizing the state, with the dates 1834-1934 inscribed prominently. The issue was well-received upon release, primarily for its artistic departure from the standard heraldic motifs of the era.
