Where it came from
The 1725 1 Real coin from Bolivia was struck at the Potosí mint during the reign of King Louis I of Spain. Louis I, the eldest son of Philip V, had a brief and tragic reign that lasted only seven months in 1724 before his sudden death from smallpox. Because news of his passing took time to cross the Atlantic, coinage in his name continued to be produced in the Spanish colonies during the transition of power back to his father, Philip V.
This coin belongs to the 'cobs' or 'macuquinas' tradition, characterized by a rugged, irregular shape resulting from the hand-hammered production process typical of the Potosí mint in the early 18th century. The design features the traditional Spanish heraldry of the period, including the crown, the cross of Jerusalem, and the arms of Castile and León. Despite its utilitarian appearance, the coin is historically significant for representing a rare, fleeting moment of monarchical succession in the Spanish Empire.
