Where it came from
The 2 Escudos of Charles IV, minted in 1791 at the Potosí mint in Bolivia, represents a significant period in the Spanish colonial monetary system. Struck during the height of the Spanish Empire's reach, this gold coin served as a pillar of trade in the Americas and Europe alike. It was produced under the strict oversight of the Spanish crown to ensure consistency in weight and fineness across its vast colonial territories.
The design features the profile of King Charles IV on the obverse, a hallmark of the Bourbon reforms that emphasized the monarch's image as an expression of royal authority. The reverse displays the crowned arms of the Spanish Empire, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules, reflecting the global maritime dominance Spain sought to project. These coins were highly regarded at the time for their gold purity and remained a standard medium of exchange long after they were initially circulated.
