Where it came from
The 2016 10-cent coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 50th anniversary of decimal currency, which was officially introduced in Australia on February 14, 1966. This special release served as a nod to the transition from the British-based pound, shilling, and pence system to the decimalized Australian dollar, reflecting a significant milestone in the nation's financial sovereignty and economic modernization.
The design features the standard Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, a portrait that has appeared on Australian coinage since 1999. The reverse retains the iconic lyrebird illustration originally created by Stuart Devlin for the 1966 decimal series. Devlin, a renowned goldsmith and designer, was tasked with creating imagery that celebrated Australia's unique wildlife, and his work remains a staple of Australian numismatics, having been well-received by the public for its clean, symbolic representation of the country's natural heritage.
