Where it came from
The 1887 Five Pound coin was minted to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, marking fifty years of her reign. Produced at the Royal Mint in London, which served as the primary source of coinage for the British Empire at the time, this gold sovereign-style coin represents the height of Victorian numismatic design. It was intended to showcase the stability and global reach of the British monarchy during a period of significant imperial expansion and industrial progress.
The coin features the 'Jubilee Head' portrait of Queen Victoria, designed by the Austrian sculptor Joseph Edgar Boehm. The design depicts the Queen wearing a small crown and the Order of the Garter, a departure from the earlier 'Young Head' portrait. While the portrait was widely circulated throughout the empire, it faced contemporary criticism for its appearance, with some observers feeling the crown looked awkwardly positioned on the monarch's head. Despite these critiques, the coin remains a highly significant historical artifact of the late nineteenth century.
