Where it came from
The 2016 5-cent coin featuring the 4th portrait of Queen Elizabeth II was minted to mark the 50th anniversary of decimal currency in Australia. On February 14, 1966, the nation moved away from the pounds, shillings, and pence system to the decimal system, which introduced the current series of coinage. This commemorative issue serves as a bridge between the historical transition of the mid-1960s and the modern era of Australian currency.
The obverse features the celebrated effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, which had been the standard for Australian coinage since 1999. The design focus for this commemorative anniversary was on honoring the longevity of the decimal system, maintaining the iconic echidna design on the reverse by Stuart Devlin that has remained a constant symbol of the Australian 5-cent piece since its inception.
