Where it came from
The 1000 yen coin minted in 2015 is part of the 47 Prefectures Commemorative Coin Program, a comprehensive series issued by the Japan Mint between 2008 and 2016. This specific design celebrates Tokushima Prefecture, honoring its unique regional identity and cultural heritage. The coins were produced to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the enforcement of the Local Autonomy Law, serving as both a legal tender commemorative piece and a significant numismatic reflection of Japan’s administrative geography.
The design of the Tokushima issue features iconic imagery associated with the prefecture, most notably the Awa Odori, a centuries-old dance festival that stands as one of the most prominent cultural traditions in Japan. The composition was developed by the Japan Mint to capture the energy and movement of the dancers, paired with the Naruto Whirlpools, a famous natural phenomenon located in the Naruto Strait. These elements were chosen to highlight the prefecture’s blend of historical performance art and distinct natural landscapes, receiving recognition from collectors for the intricate relief work typically found in the silver proof-finish variants of the series.
